My interpretation is that bad thing with bad memories is that they cause pain when ever they come back. Good memories make a tough journney smoother and bring a smile out of the blue.
This reminds me of one of my favourite song from hindi film 'Yaadein'.
baatein bhool jati hain....Yaadein yaad aati hain...yaadein...ye yaadein
